Pregnancy care spans conception until 6 weeks after the baby is born. Hayden takes full responsibility for your care during this time.
Ideally, we will hear from you when your home pregnancy test is positive. Please call the rooms on 9416 4566 with details of the date of the first day of the last menstrual period. We can then make an appointment for your first visit and also be available should any pain or bleeding develop in the interim. Usually, we will see you when you are 7+ weeks gestation (about 5+ weeks from when you think conception took place).
The first visit usually takes 30-45 mins and will involve taking a detailed history, performing an examination including taking a pap smear if this is due. A detailed ultrasound will be performed to confirm the pregnancy and the expected due date. This may be an internal scan. Women DO NOT need to have an outside “dating scan” as this can be performed free of charge at the first visit.
Blood tests, genetic screening and ultrasound have become infinitely more complex in the last 5 years and discussion about which test is most appropriate is individualised and will be discussed. Part of the reason we see you at 7 weeks is so you can think about the genetic tests which can be done at 10+ weeks. Subsequent visits usually occur at 10+ (with genetic tests done after your consult and scan) 13 (with detailed ultrasound) 16, 20 (with detailed ultrasound), 24, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 39, 40 and 41 weeks of pregnancy.
Hayden is qualified to provide high quality ultrasound services to assess early pregnancy viability, the growth and wellbeing of the baby and the assessment of structural abnormalities. An ultrasound will be performed at each visit.
Delivery is preferred at St Vincent’s private hospital or Epworth Freemasons. The colocation of the consulting rooms at St Vincent’s private provides a convenient and familiar environment to patients with onsite pathology, blood bank and operating theatres and intensive care unit if necessary. The midwives at these sites are experienced and provide exceptional care and service.
Hayden also has admitting rights at Mercy Hospital for Women and Francis Perry House.
Hayden shares a weekend roster with Dr Peter England, Dr Rachel Ryan and Dr Samantha Hargreaves. A consultant obstetrician will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from conception until 6 weeks after the birth of your baby.
